Let me tell you a story.

I’ve been vegetarian for a long time, and I had a vegetarian pregnancy in 2019. Even though I’m a dietitian, and even though I’ve specialized in prenatal nutrition care for years, I still felt little spikes of anxiety about whether I was eating well enough, or whether I would have any complications because of my diet.

One night, I started ruminating about omega-3 fatty acids and my baby’s brain development, and, feeling desperate, I decided to order fish and chips from a pub down the street. The online menu said they were “beer-battered,” so I called to ask them if they could make the fish without the beer—they couldn’t. I gave up and decided it was clearly important for me to actually figure this out. That night, I started digging into the nutrition science and research on vegetarian pregnancies (they call it “me-search” for good reason!).

The information I found after that was so helpful! Not only did it ease the stress I was feeling, it also resolved an emotional conflict and values tension that had emerged. On one hand, a core part of my identity revolves around ethics, especially related to animal welfare and sustainability. On the other hand, I was already sensing my own transition into becoming a responsible parent, where my child’s needs had become my highest priority.

The reality is, both your values and your baby’s health are incredibly important during this transformative time in your life. I’m so proud of this course because it’s designed to give you something I needed that night: evidence and steps on how to balance those two things.

Right now, you might be…

  • Anxious about getting everything you need from food for a healthy pregnancy

  • Feeling conflicted about staying vegetarian throughout pregnancy

  • Concerned about compromising your baby’s health in utero

  • Hearing from friends, family members, or healthcare providers that you should be eating meat and fish to get enough protein

  • Unsure what to do about a test result that found a nutrient deficiency, like iron

  • Feeling like you can’t eat enough or aren’t gaining weight

  • Experiencing side effects of pregnancy like nausea, making it a struggle to eat

  • Feeling doubt about what to eat or how much to eat

  • Worried about specific issues, like a low birth-weight baby or preterm birth

  • Pregnant with twins or other multiples, and realizing you have even higher nutritional needs

These concerns are completely valid and understandable—they just mean that you care about your baby’s wellbeing and safety!

Without addressing the concerns, though, things can escalate. Inadequate nutrition in pregnancy can cause

  • Sub-optimal growth and development

  • Preterm birth or a low birthweight baby

  • Miscarriage

  • Gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia

  • Declining nutrient reserves for you as your pregnancy progresses, leading to longer postpartum recovery

You should know that all of these concerns are resolvable, and that often it only takes small tweaks to your diet or overall eating pattern to ensure you’re giving your baby what they need to grow well.

Pregnancy is such a good time to make healthy, positive changes to the way we eat, but unfortunately it’s common to have little or no discussion about nutrition with a healthcare provider. This is such a missed opportunity! The conditions a fetus experiences during pregnancy set the stage for your child’s entire life, and nutrition is a key factor in that earliest environment.

Course Breakdown

Introduction

The introduction video explains how the course works, the approach I take to nutrition, the evidence it’s based on, and asks you to reflect on your relationship with food, giving some red flags that are sometimes correlated with plant-based diets.

A Positive Relationship with Food

The second video covers why your relationship with food, and the way you think about food, might be getting in the way of making positive healthy changes. I cover the building blocks of a positive relationship with food and give some strategies to improve these if they’re missing in your life. This might be a surprising topic to include in a course on vegetarian pregnancy, but it’s so important, and in some ways is more important than what you’re eating.

Key Nutrients

This is the main nutrition video in the course. I cover the most commonly missing or low nutrients in a vegetarian pregnancy, based on my practice experience and the most up-to-date research.

Things You Don’t Need to Worry About

A lot of pregnant clients are anxious about food in general, and because there’s so much noise out there on what you should or shouldn’t eat, I give you some clear guidance on what’s not worth your time or emotional energy focusing on.

Weight Gain and How Much To Eat

Probably the most common topic that comes up for my clients is 1. How much to eat and 2. How much weight to gain in pregnancy. I go through the general recommendations, qualify these recommendations, and give you alternatives to counting calories.

Food Aversions and Cravings

I help you figure out what to do if you’re having cravings for meat, and talk about when cravings are a red flag.

Managing Side Effects and Other Tips

This video reviews the evidence from research on the most effective strategies for coping with and reducing nausea and some other difficult pregnancy side effects. I also go through dental health, caffeine recommendations, and fitting in some physical activity.

Food Safety in Pregnancy

You might have heard different messages on what’s safe to eat and what’s not during pregnancy—this lesson covers the highlights so you know how to minimize your chances of getting seriously sick from food.

How to Cook with Plant Proteins

I show you some basics on prepping and cooking with plant proteins like tofu, tempeh, beans, and lentils.

FAQs

  • You’re busy. Maybe you’re working full-time through your pregnancy and maybe you have other kids to look after! It’s a lot. You know what can make that worse? Being under-nourished and chronically tired, OR trying to search through the mostly terrible, free nutrition advice on the internet when you randomly think of something that might be important.

This leads to more anxiety about food, and often actively harms your nutrition status as well as your relationship with food. The information in this course cuts through the noise. It will help you feel better in your own body (less fatigue, less pregnancy side effects) while ensuring your baby gets what she needs in a busy time of life.

This online course is such a time- and cost-efficient way to invest in your child’s health—it will pay you back in the time you spend wondering about food, trying to decide what to eat, and feeling crappy.

  • Research finds over and over that nutrition during pregnancy is really important. Research also finds that getting help from a dietitian during pregnancy improves birth outcomes, including preventing low birth weight babies and preventing preterm birth.

Right now, your body is working SO HARD to grow a placenta, lay down your baby’s bones and organs, and is trying to keep you going as well! It’s a huge job and requires a ton of nutrients. Nutrition is both subtle and powerful at the same time, and it really does make a difference.

  • Maybe! Most doctors and midwives are amazing. The thing is, though, they’re really busy and have a ton of stuff to cover with you aside from your diet. They also might not be knowlegable about vegetarian diets, and specific issues can fall through the cracks.

  • This is a tricky one. Yes, in general, fears that have been raised about vegetarian diets have been blown out of proportion, and many vegetarian clients I work with already have adequate, varied, and balanced diets.

It does take some knowledge and planning, though, and sometimes something minor that’s missing becomes more of a problem over time, when it could have been corrected early on. Sometimes people have been dealing with low energy for a long time, for example, and all it takes is a discussion about iron, or vitamin D, or another nutrient that they can easily get more of from food or a supplement.

In pregnancy, it’s well worth your time to make sure you’re getting what you need without meat. It doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need some attention.

  • I totally get that it might seem like a lot to buy an online nutrition course. BUT if you consider the value it’s offering, this is a steal!

For one-on-one counselling, you’d be paying $140 for an initial assessment, then $110 for follow-up sessions. For vegetarian pregancy, I might see you for three or four appointments, getting up to $300-$500 in total.

With the course, I’ve packed in a ton of the most helpful info, plus resources, and you don’t even need to leave your bed ;)

  • With a full refund option within 30 days of purchase, there’s no risk for you, no questions asked, and absolutely no hard feelngs that you didn’t feel satisfied with this course. In fact, I would love to hear your feedback! I’m always aiming to improve, so if you have thoughts about any topics that are missing, or have any recommendations for me, please email me and I will consider updating the content.
